This is different for everyone. Even the best fitting denture does not function as well as your natural teeth. This is because a denture is one solid piece, as opposed to your teeth, which each had their own root and support system. The need to cut up food and chew with the back teeth as opposed to cutting food with the front teeth is a common adjustment that denture wearers have to make. Some people are able to wear and use dentures without adhesive, but in many cases denture adhesive is necessary to keep the dentures in place and have a reasonable amount of function. In general, upper dentures are more stable than lower dentures. If someone is unhappy with the chewing function that a denture has, implants can be placed to help hold the denture in place in some cases.
In many cases the answer is yes – this is called having an “immediate” denture. This allows you to not go any length of time with no teeth. Immediate dentures can often become loose over time, this is because that after teeth are taken out the bone around where the teeth were shrinks. The fit of a loose denture can be improved in some cases if it is relined. In some situations people have a second denture made after 6 months to a year of healing occurs so they can have a spare.
Every patient is different, and every mouth is different. Some patients have the same set of dentures for 30 years, some get a new set every 3-5 years. Some people have very strong bites and wear dentures down more quickly than others, sometimes dentures can be damaged and/or broken. Dentures, at times, may need to be repaired, relined, or replaced.
